Teaming up with Creative Communities Black Country and the Friends of Abbey Street Park I was commissioned to create a legacy mural in the heart of Gornal in Dudley. Working together to create this 70 foot legacy mural which not only celebrated the Queens Platinum Jubilee but the local area and the people of Gornal.
I got a huge sense of local pride and community when meeting up with the Friends of Abbey Street Park so I wanted to reflect this in my design. I book ended the main design with a night scene of the town and a daytime scene of the park to represent both the nature and industrialism that is so strongly apparent. Wild flowers will also be planted along the front of the mural which really will set the whole piece off beautifully and cant wait to watch it evolve!
The mural was revealed to the community by the local Mayor, with the design being hugely well received. It really has brightened up this particular area of the park and will hopefully be a conversation piece for anyone who walks past, whether its the stories about Grey Lady haunting the local library, the Pig on the Wall or the references to the easter parade - there really is something for everyone on here!
As with most of my legacy mural projects, we kicked off with a workshop where talked about what Gornal meant to them - the community, dialect, history, local tales, landmarks etc, encouraging the group to doodle their answers as well as write them down. They also provided some great photographs and history books as well as some wonderful drawings provided by some local schools - all of which gave me plenty of food for thought!
